Hideo Kojima’s upcoming espionage game PHYSINT has found a surprising new home. After PlayStation Studios decided to step away from the project, Kojima Productions has officially partnered with Xbox to continue development and bring the ambitious action-espionage title to life.
PHYSINT was originally announced in 2024 as a collaboration between Kojima Productions and PlayStation. The project immediately attracted attention because Kojima described it as a next-generation espionage experience, making it feel like a spiritual return to the genre he helped define with Metal Gear.
According to Kojima, PlayStation unexpectedly notified the studio in June that it planned to cancel the project. Kojima Productions still wanted to continue, so the team spent the following months looking for another partner before eventually reaching an agreement with Xbox.
Xbox has now officially confirmed that it will publish PHYSINT, expanding its existing relationship with Kojima Productions beyond OD. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company wants to support Kojima’s ambition to challenge conventions, while Kojima says the studio remains focused on redefining the action-espionage genre.
The deal is especially interesting because Xbox and Kojima Productions are no longer working together on just one game. Their partnership will also expand into film and television, suggesting Microsoft sees the relationship as something much bigger than a single publishing agreement.

There are still plenty of unknowns surrounding PHYSINT. No release date or confirmed platform list has been announced, and an Xbox publishing deal does not automatically mean the game will be exclusive to Xbox hardware. Kojima previously suggested the project could still be several years away.
What is clear is that PHYSINT survived a major change behind the scenes. A project once closely associated with PlayStation is now moving forward under Xbox, giving Microsoft another major Kojima Productions title and turning PHYSINT into one of the most interesting publisher switches in modern gaming.
